cos1776 Note of Caution: Very little is known about the parents and childhood of Mrs. Susannah (Unknown) Wright, but it would seem that solid evidence is lacking at this stage in the research to be able to say with any degree of certainty who her parents were or what her maiden name was. I am not an expert in this family, however, so please jump in and add your information and sources.

  • 2001: Nancy Bay states, "The fact remains that to this day no one has been able to unearth a record which can factually document their [Joel and Susanna Wright's] identity."

Research Notes (and Speculations)

Please feel free to present your theories and speculations here. INCLUDE the source of your information.

THEORY A: Susannah was a Bates.

  • Source: Family tradition.
    • per Annette Potter, 2008: "... She had no English name of Bates or Bentley as is sometimes given to her."
  • Proof: None yet.

THEORY B: Susannah was a Bentley.

  • Source: Family tradition.
    • per Annette Potter, 2008: " ... She had no English name of Bates or Bentley as is sometimes given to her."
  • Proof: None yet.

THEORY C: Susannah was of Native American blood.

  • Source: Family tradition.
    • per Annette Potter, 2008: "... We have always been told that there was Indian in the Wright family. The story that I did on Mary Wright and her Indian doll, plus her looks in some of the pictures her granddaughter, Daisy, had would support that. The story that Mary handed down to Daisy was that Joel went from Virginia to North Carolina for an apprentiship. He met an Indian woman and married her. She was given the English name of Susannah. ..."
  • Proof: None yet.

Possible Photos of Susannah

  • There are two pictures (maybe more) floating around the internet which are occasionally identified as Susannah. Researcher Annette Potter presented the photos here and in 2008 discussed what she knew of their origins and authenticity here.
