MYTH's BUSTED

NO historical source proves Susannah's maiden name. The 1849 booklet by Thomas Harding Ellis entitled 'A Memorandum of the Ellis Family" that names John Ellis's wife as 'Susannah'.

Utilizing FamilySearch's Experimental "Expand your search with Full Text" where FamilySearch has used Artificial Intelligence to digitally transcribe historical county documents to make them searchable with queries. A search for "Ellis" "Royal" in "Henrico County, Virginia British Colonial America" between "1680 to 1740" and the results showed No Historical documents include both "Ellis" and "Royal" in the same court record, land indenture, will. etc.. One would expect some interaction between families united by marriage, but the search found no records in Henrico County county records that include both "Ellis" and "Royal".

An Ellis Family newsletter from 1994 says: The Summer 1994 Ellis Newsletter someone raised a question regarding Susannah Royall as the wife of John Ellis (1661-1728) who settled on Tuckahoe Creek in Henrico County, VA. One descendant says he had been in contact with major researchers on the Royall family of Virginia and they indicated that children of the original immigrant, Joseph Royal, were well documented and there was no Susannah in the family. An enclosed map in that newsletter showed that the land owned by the Royall family was not in close proximity to that of the Ellis family.

Susannah's given name is proved as John Ellis wife by a 15 Dec 1715 Henrico Co. VA land indenture found in the court records.
