The Stovall Journall reports her birth as 1650. the more well-respected Carmae M. Smith's book, "The Stovall Family in America" reports her birth as 1646. That birthdate is also reported on-line in the "Family Search" Ancestral Files.

According to the "Stovall Family Record", by Clarence Friend, former president of the LaRue County (Kentucky) Historical Society, The Burtons lived in Gobbs Virginia. There is some controversy as to whether Susannah was an "Allen" or a "Hatcher". Mr. Glenn M. Turnell notes in excerpts from an unknown edition of the "Stovall Journal" (page 100) that there is no hard evidence to support either side of the controversy. There is a possibility however (which he describes at length), that Susannah was born in 1650 and was the daughter of Edward Hatcher and Mary Ward (who was the daughter of Seth Ward). Mr. Turnell later describes on page 139 of the Journal, that he still believes she was not an Allen, but perhaps was a sister of Edward Hatcher, who married Mary Ward. Mr. Glenn M. Turnell writes in the "Stovall Journal" (page 136) that the birth and death dates for Thomas Burton do not appear to match with Susannah's dates. He states that "There is either a skipped Burton generation here - or - again we have one of those very apparent errors."

Carmae M. Smith also writes about the Hatcher vs Allen controversy. There seems to be no clear answer to this question as yet, but I am leaving the 'Allen' connection intact until proven otherwise.
