In the 1860 census for Delaware Co., Delaware twp., IA, Susannah Craddock Jefferson is 24 years old, already a widow, and living at the home of her father and mother in-law, William & Joan Jefferson, both born in NY. Her daughter Ella is 7/12 years old (7 months). (The below information was emailed to me from Elizabeth Orsay Balazs, whose credentials are: "Susanna Craddock & Nelson Sherman were my step-mother Virginia Ives's great-great-grandparents. I will tell you what I know about Susanna, but I will also copy this message to my step-mother and father, Paul Orsay, to give you more information. My information came from them in the first place.") Susanna's Mother died when she was six, and a wealthy merchant named Henderson took her till her sister Diannah was married. From Rockville she and husband went to Manchester IA in 1857 and lived on a farm till 1860. She then moved to Chickasaw remaining till July 1861. In July 1861 she married Nelson Sherman. (This Susannah Craddock is my paternal great-grandmother. I have no idea where or what Chickasaw is, but I suspect it is in Iowa. All I know is that she and her new husband, Nelson Sherman lived in Rochester, MN, where my father, Burt Jefferson Stiles, knew them well, having visited his grandparents many times with his parents, Winfield Scott and Ella Stiles.)
