CHILDHOOD MEMORIES OF MY GRANDPARENTS by Olive Shaffer

Susanna Sites, wife of Abraham A. Sites, was the granddaughter of George Sites II. Susanna was raised in the old Sites home of Joseph Sites, located near the place known as Waterfall, south of the present site of Rough Run.

I know little of her chidhood save that the girls, in her day, got very little schooling. Men were the bread winners, and needed an education, while women were the homemakers, and had little need of education. However Susanna did got to school, but her school training was meager.

I remember her as a kind-hearted grandmother, and sometimes quite witty. My happiest childhood memories were on Sunday afternoons when our family and my aunt Emma Sherman's family would spend time together at the Spring Run home place. There was a calamus patch below the house near the stream. We enjoyed gathering the bitter herb. We tried to see who could get the largest rock. We then cleaned them and spread them out to dry.

Another pleasant place was the Spring Run Gap, in which there was an attractive waterfall. The water was too cold for wading, but the moutain area was decked with birch trees and mountain fern. We gaathered the ferns for decorations and the birch had a sweet taste, and we chewed the bark.
