CHILDHOOD MEMORIES OF MY GRANDPARENTS by Olive Shaffer My grandfather, Abraham A. Sites, was the grandson of Abraham Sites (one of the five brothers who settled in the area of South Mill Creek). He grew up at the foot of Elkhorn mountain near the Sites Cemetery. He had a wonderful memory, and often quoted scripture passages. Grandfather enjoyed his apple orchard and impressed his visitors, on Sunday afternoon, by bringing in a basket of red apples decorated with knives placed around the side for paring. The apples were stored in a bank cellar across the Spring Run stream near the house. [continued under Susanna Sites] [From "Genealogical Records from the Seitz/Sites Family, Volume I," John V. Beck, Suzanne Sites Gibson] CIVIL WAR INCIDENTS During the ware between the states, known as the Civil War, it was a time of skirmishing in the area of Grant County. When Susanna Sites and Abraham Sites were married they rode horseback to Keyser for the wedding. Susanna hid her wedding gown on the outside of the house fearing the home would be ransacked by southern soldiers. Another incident was that Susanna's brother, George III, was kidnapped while sitting in a high chair at the table. He was carried several miles from the home and was found a few days later unharmed. Adam Sites, brother of Abraham A. Sites, died of yellow fever while in the service of the Union. (by Olive Shaffer, from "Childhood Memories of my Grandparents") References
