"October 15, 1877, Mr. Shankland was united in marriage with Miss Susan R. Segear, who was then a resident of Vermilion County, Ill. Her parents are both living and now reside in Omaha, Neb. Unto our subject and his wife have been born two children, but the younger died in infancy. She shows her birthdate in 1900 as July 1860, but I believe she shaved a few years off. In the 1860 census for White Oak, Ingham Co., Michigan, Jas 'Sager' is 35, farmer from NY; with M[ary] 36 NY; W. H. 13 NY; M. A. 11 ; M. 8 (f); J. 5 (m); S. 2 (f) and E. A. 1 (f) -- all born MI. In the 1870 census for White Oak, Ingham Co., Michigan, James 'Sagar' is 45 farmer from New York; Mary is 46; William H. 23 both New York; Margarette 17; John 15; Susan 12; Eliza 11; and Delphine 1 -- all born Michigan. {p. 318} {1870 census of Michigan, Library of Michigan <http://envoy.libraryofmichigan.org/1870_census/Default.asp?MenuItem=Home>} In the 1880 census for Grant, Vermillion Co., Illinois, James Segear is a farmer age 55 born New York (father Vermont, mother New York); wife Mary F. 57 born New York (parents same); children are William H. 32 born New York; John R. 25 born Michigan; Eliza 21 MI; and Delphine 11 born Michigan. A. Y.
