Birmingham News (AL) - March 27, 2006 Deceased Name: BRIGGS, SUSAN HUNT DAVIS BRIGGS, SUSAN HUNT DAVIS, beloved Mother, Wife and Friend died March 24, 2006. Susan a resident of Mountain Brook since 1960, was born in Akron Ohio, the only child of Pauline Harper Davis and Adrian E. Davis MD. She attended Old Trail School in Akron and then graduated with a bachelor's degree in Chemistry (Phi Beta Kappa) from Sweet Briar College in Virginia. She had graduate studies in Education at Akron University. In 1957, she married Dick D. Briggs, Jr., MD, enriching his life for the next 47 years. After teaching high school chemistry in St. Louis and South Carolina, she worked in biomedical research at Southern Research Institute and in Pulmonary at UAB. An avid tennis player, as well as tennis and basketball fan, she served as Executive Director of the Alabama Tennis Association for almost 2 decades. During this time, she was the catalyst for starting Senior and Super-Senior Women's USTA League in Alabama. She was honored by the League as Player of the Year in 2005 for these contributions. She was a member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church and an active participant and teacher at Episcopal Place. She was a member of the Jr. League of Birmingham, many tennis associations and clubs, and the UAB Golden 100.

She is survived by her husband and the greatest loves of her life, her children and grandchildren: Adrienne Davis Briggs Lake MD (Doug) and Mason, Davis and Amy Lake, D. Dowling Briggs III MD (Elizabeth) and Dowling, Matthew and Caroline Briggs, Daniel Roth Briggs (Elizabeth) and Amelia Margaux Briggs.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Monday, March 27, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Mountain Brook. She will be buried following the family service at Briggs Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Kemper County Mississippi.

In lieu of flowers, Susan and the family suggests donations be made to a charity of individual choice, or to one that Susan supported, such as: Episcopal Place (Birmingham), the Alabama Child Caring Foundation (Care of BC/BS of Alabama), The University of South Briggs Scholarship Fund (Sewanee Tennessee), or the Birmingham Alabama Humane Society.
