Research Notes

(all taken from the many stories/traditions about Susan - nothing verified yet...)

  • supposedly a daughter of a Revolutionary soldier
  • possibly a madam in a brothel in possibly New Orleans or New York City
  • possibly never legally married to Charles Follin, although their relationship was acknowledged and accepted by others in the family and society and her death notice reads "Mrs. Susan Follin"
  • possibly not the biological mother of Miriam whose confirmed birth was in New Orleans in 1836. Accusations had been made in court that Miriam was the daughter of Charles and a negro slave, however it was never sufficiently proven.
  • possibly not the biological mother of Noel, although their close mother/son relationship is shown in his letters
