md Verla, Children: Lori, Lisa, Mark, Amy Jo. Married Verla Mae Gibbs 14 April 1949 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Stewart Alan Woods was born to Clara and Embree Woods on April 15, 1922 in Page City, Kansas. When he was about 2 years old the family moved to Stratton, Nebraska. Stewart attended Stratton High School and during the late summers showed prize winning Poland China hogs at the State Fairs in Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Indiana for Dr. John Stewart. At one time a dinner was held for all the boys who were named after Dr. Stewart who had delivered them. Some 20 answered to the name of Stewart.He was Valedictorian of his class of 1939 and the following year entered the University of Nebraska. He was in the ROTC and was called into service in 1942, serving in Germany and Italy. He also attended the Nuremberg Trials. When he was discharged in 1944 he returned to Lincoln and started teaching at Fairfield High School. In April 1949 he married Verla Mae Gibbs. In 1951 he was recalled to the Field Artillery. This was for 1 1/2 years since the active reserves should have been called first.In 1955 he and Verla decided to move to Oregon where he started working for the State of Oregon Department of Revenue (formerly the Tax Commission). He retired after 27 years. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church for 50 years. Whenever he had a chance, he loved to rock the wee ones and sing to them his favorite songs, “Irish Lullaby” and “Amazing Grace”!Stewart and Verla spent some time traveling, then he turned to his yard and garden which he generously shared with his friends and neighbors.He was preceded in death by his parents Embree and Clara Woods of Lebanon, Ore.; brothers Lowell, Kenneth, Wilfred, Harold, Arthur and Ralph; sisters Lucile Spencer, Esther Williamson and Norma Hust.He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Verla; son Mark (and wife Allison) of Mooresville, N.C.; daughters Amy Jelinek of Albany, Dr. Lori Woods of Portland and Lisa (and husband John) Large of Pendleton; grandchildren Christopher, Matthew and Ashley Woods, Madeleine and Salena Jelinek, Bethany, Libby, Rachel and Sarah Woods; sisters Naomi Herman of Lebanon, Ore. and Ina Prince of Stratton, Neb.; and 108 nieces and nephews through 3 generations.He succumbed to cancer on January 19, 2006.
