    1. CALAIS - Sterling M. Carter, 82, died unexpectedly July 21, 2004, at his residence. He was born Nov. 11, 1921, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada, the son of Lawrence and Sadie (Waddingham) Carter.

    Sterling was employed for many years by the city of Calais, retiring in 1986.

    He was predeceased by a son, Larry Carter; a brother, Jimmy Carter; and a sister, Edith Cunningham. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Violet "Vi" Gaddis Carter of Calais; one son, Sterling A. Carter and his wife, Linda, of Meddybemps; one daughter-in-law, Georgia Carter of Baileyville; two brothers, Larry and his wife, Maida, of Crawford, Roland of Fredericton, New Brunswick; two sisters, Agnes and Betty of Connecticut; five grandchildren, Tina Erskine and her husband, Fred, of Calais, Robbie Carter and his wife, Tammy, of Ohio, Tricia Hachey and her husband, Daren, of Winthrop, Tony and Michelle Carter, both of Florida, Jay and Samantha Carter of Baileyville; five great-grandchildren, Katie and Emily Erskine of Calais, Cameron and Nathan Hachey of Winthrop, Carter Benner of Florida; many nieces and nephews.

    Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 29, 2004, at the Calais Cemetery with Pastor Bob Hinton officiating. Donations in his memory may be sent to a charity of ones choice. Arrangements are by the Scott-Wilson Funeral Home of Calais.
