- I am trying to determine the name of the wife of Stephen I. K. Smith (1756-1806). He died intestate in Surry Co., NC. The probate records suggest that her name was Mary. All or most of his 10 children moved to Overton Co., TN. The 1820 census of Overton Co., TN shows a Mary Smith (born before 1775). The 10 children were (per the estate of Stephen I. K.'s father, Charles Smith (d 1829, Surry Co., NC), each inheriting $55 of the $550 bequeathed to the children of Stephen I. K. Smith:
- 1. Thomas Smith
- 2. ____, married Hedgepeth Holman
- 3. Charles Smith (1780-1854), married Sarah Hord
- 4. Susan, wife of Thomas Burrus
- 5. Elizabeth, wife of William Smith
- 6. William Smith
- 7. Sarah, wife of William Barksdale
- 8. Nancy, wife of Samuel Roberson
- 9. James Smith
- 10. _____
- If the wife of Hedgepeth Holman was named Justina, this would strongly suggest to me that the wife of Stephen I. K. Smith was descended from the Burrus family.
