Isaiah Loomis settled on the lot next north of the Ezra Loomis lot; Solomon Aldrich, a native of Rhode Island on a wild lot a little north of the Williams and Loomis neighborhood; and Stephen Sears near the latter. Mr. Sears was a deacon of the Congregational Church, a quiet, peaceable neighbor and cleared up his farm by industry and hard labor. He died March 14, 1847, aged 84, and "Sary," his wife, May 7, 1838, aged 72. A Mr. Crosby settled near Mr. Sears and married one of his daughters. This wedding was one of the first in the town.

The paternal grandfather, also named James, was born in Dutchess County, N. Y., and moved later to Chenango County, during the period of its earliest settlement. He cleared a farm, established a sawmill, accumulated a good property, and lived to the advanced age of eighty-six years. He traced his ancestry to Ireland.

  4. At the time of Stephen's birth, Dutchess County (one of the original Provinces of New York, 1683) encompassed the counties of Putnam and Dutchess as well as two towns in present day Columbia County. Until 1713, Dutchess was administered by Ulster county. It wasn't until 1812 that Putnam detached from Dutchess. By this time, Stephen was already in Chenango County, which was originally established in 1798 from the Tioga and Herkimer counties, which were in turn established in 1791 from Montgomery County, which was itself established in 1772 from Albany County, one of the original Provinces of New York established 1664. Therefore, considering the communication of the day, there are plenty of areas to search for possible records for this man.
  5.   Eighteenth Century Records of the portion of Dutchess County, New York that was included in the Rombout Precinct and the original Town of Fishkill, collected by William Willis Reese, includes tax-payer lists of the original town of Fishkill for the years 1717/1718, 1737/1738, 1738/1739, 1739/1740, 1740/1741-1779 (lacking 1749-52, which have been lost, and 1764 & 1776, which were not entered.) This time frame clearly covers when Stephen Sears was born, but there is not a Sears listed in this record.
