Facts and Events
During his early life, Mr. Howard followed farming with his father. Nov. 30, 1861, he enlisted in the Union army, in the war of the Rebellion, and again as a veteran, Dec. 16, 1863 ; was honorably discharged July 26, 1865. He escaped with only a slight wound in one ear, and again in one arm, on Lookout Mountain. He was at no time a patient in a hospital, and did valuable service in the army as private and sergeant. After the war closed he engaged for a time in mercantile pursuits in Wattsburgh, and in the fall of 1868 he moved to Clearwater, Minn., where he has since been engaged in farming. - From "The Howard Genealogy" by Jarvis Cutler Howard, 1884, page 74.
