From early boyhood till 21 years of age, Mr. Howard devoted his time to farming. From Oct., 1870, to Nov., 1879, he was employed by the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern R. R. Co., serving two years as brakeman and seven years as a conductor. After his marriage he resided in Collinwood, Lake Co., O., till March 1880, when he moved to Keokuk, Lee Co., la., and was there employed as a conductor by the Wabash, St. Louis & Pacific R. R. Co.
