    Stephen Downing was born on 12 February 1762.1
    He married Susannah Helme, daughter of Samuel Helme and Mary Williams, at Cambridge, Washington Co., New York, on 16 August 1784.1

    Stephen Downing died on 12 July 1843 at Frenchtown, Monroe Co., Michigan.1
    He was a Revolutionary War soldier. Enlisting at Canterbury, Connecticut in 1776 for six months (pension file S 29122). 1777 at New London for six mos. 1778 for nine mos. under Capt. Joseph Durkee. 1779 under Capt. Wattles on the privateer Young Cromwell which took 3 prizes and was shipwrecked at Cape Fear Shoals, North Carolina. He returned home by land. Enlisted for six months in 1780 under Capt. Hinman aboard the privateer Marquis Lafayette. His pension app. states that he lived at Cambridge, New York for seven years, then at Cayuga Lake for twenty years, then moved to Frenchtown (now Monroe), Monroe Co., Michigan.1
