I was Bourn 1845 at.Tenants Cove Kars Kings Co. B. I was the son of Walter Cosseboom A blacksmith their was four boys and six girls of us we lived in A little old house by the shore from the age of five years I was sent to school in A little old schoolhouse that was but A few rods from home at the age of twelve I was taken sick by overheating myself by scating and falling through the ice I lay in bed for months watched by kind friends never expected to recover for two long years my mother [Emily Ann (Ogden) Cosseboom ] watched over me night and day hoping for my recovery at lenght through the goodness of God I recovered though very much afflicted...feaversors which made me lame ... I got two cruches made and ... to walk on them I began to ... to school again where I went untill the age of seventeen when I went with my Uncle [William Cosseboom] to learn the shoemaker trade at Greenwich Kings Co. where I worked with him I worked but six months their before he moved to Long Island Queens County where I worked as Apprintise for five years during that time I was greatly troubled with those soars that broke out on my both legs and left arm bones the sise of three inches and a half in length and half inch in weth (come out) my Aunt [Mary Ann (Cosseboom) Cosseboom] did everything that lade in her power to cure me and did as we would thiss sometimes but they woould break out again towards the close of my Apprintiship I got so I could walk without my crutches the little village were we ... comprised of A half dozen houses ... in May 1867 I were baptized by Rev Tho... Vanwart and joined the free Chr... Baptis Church at the cove where I have been A member ever since I finished my apprinticeship with my Uncle and moved down to my native place to comence business for myself. On June 1st 1868 I commenced for myself I built A little shop and carried business on A small scale my father being poor could not help me I had but thirtheen dollars to invest in stock and tools I worked hard and got on by degrees. In the summer of 1869 I went on A pleasur trip to the states I went up the St. John river and halted at frederctown from thence to prince William twenty miles Above frederctown after three days ramble ... ...sted for Woodstock by steamer and ... by ...stage to Holten Main I ... with the Americans for two weeks from that part of the country I took the cars for St. Stephens I walked to Calis A state in Main after visiting those two places I took steamer at the head of St. Croix river and steamed for Easport Main After visiting that place I took the steamer New England and steamed for St. John on the following day I took steamer for home I then went to work to make up for what I spent in the fall of 1869 I bought A house and lot for which I paid one hundred and fifty dollars I furnished the house with A few chairs and a stove bed and some others little nesseries and commenced housekeeping my sister[Mary Jane Cosseboom] kept house for me in the fall of 1870 I took an apprintice for six months then I drove business some stronger by having more help his time being up then left me single handed in the summer of 18.. I finished my house the cost of it being one hundred and twenty five dollars I now begin to have things around me more comfortable and nicer than before in Nov of this year I joined the Good Templers at Princess Elexandrew lodge No 36 which I am A member to the present hoping allways to remain the samemine the order is a good one and I hope every young man of this place as well as every other place will join the socity. My sister kept house for me till december of this year when she like maney others girls got married and left me to keep Batchelor hall Alone this I did till Jan 1st 1872 when I took another apprintice and then I had help to buy the pancakes which we have after ... fashon when I have to do this job ... cooking it gives me to know what ... want in the house. I now begin to think about looking for A house keeper but I must confess I have been so bashfull that I dared not go with the girls I rember well to day the first girl I ever went with was in Mar 19th 1872 and from that time I have been looking around pretty sharp I think if I have luck I will get one yet however I will do the best I can this winter has been A very disegreeble one their was more snow on the ground this winter then was ever nown for menny years it is the first of Aprl and the fences is covered by the snow I have give you but A short history of twenty six years of my life it is today the 6th of Aprel I feel my self to be A well man free from those sore that once bothered me I now will be glad to give you more of the paticulars of my life as I pass along on this day 6th Aprel we were called together for to have A school meeting we met but could not do any thing on the account of having disinterested trustees. The ice is remarkable good for the time of year their is not much chanch for the wild geese to feed they have been flying over for the last three or four days. To day is sunday 7th A beautiful day I was to meeting in the morning and heard Rev. Springer Preach. it is very warm to day in the afternoon I went to meeting and heard Rev S Downey Preach after meeting I went home and took tea with a girl. Monday is A fine day very foggy in the mourning I have commenced work on the bench to make some boots that is ordered this day passes without anything very interesting tuesday this day commences with heavy fog and mists of rain the snow is settled very fast the m oles is beginning to show up My mother came in this morning to cook and fix up for us which whas A great help to us towards night she went home and it commenced to rain soon after she left I fear she got wet.-Wednesday it is still raining the snow is disipearing very fast their is bare ground to be seen quite plain their was A few customers in to day for work it is time to get supper and then I will go to bed. just now I heard that our neighbor C____M____ had the bad luck to loose one of his horses Thursday the sun rose beautifull it is A very fine day the snow run off very fast this day passes without anything very peticular. Friday this morning sun rose beautifull the customers routed me out of bead their was five here before nine oclock, we will have to work pretty hard to sadisfy them, for they are in a great hurry for to get their boots so they will keep their feet dry. I heard of the death of A nother horse this mourning. The mail came today and brought me A letter and pamphlet the letter was from an unown person and it contained these words

Saterday we got up and had breakfast by candle light,Smith my man started for home this day commenced with rain It was quite A disegrable day it seemed to be very long being to work all alone this day passes without anything very interesting Sunday this morning I went down to father s and stoped all day in the evening my brother[ either Gabriel Vanwart Cosseboom or John Henry Cosseboom] came up with me and staid all night Monday this mourning is Dark and cloudy smith is not back yet custermers came and went at 4 o'clock. Smith come I went to lodge and we had A very interesting time. people is talking on all sides about me at preasant some is trooth and some is not but however all persons have more or less talking about them Tuesday People is still driving on the ice and it is good ice according to all appearance I hear of some few making shugar this spring although I have not had enough to seeten my tooth I have just received A letter from my brother the contents I will not mencion hear. Wednesday this day I have A good deal of trouble about some news I heard not aney of us is free from trouble and triels as we pass through this world, their was one of our neighbor women in today to see us. I received onely $2.00 to day Thursday passess without aney thing verry peticular it is about the last crossen the bellisle bay Friday it is A beautifull day the snow is running of verry fast the road is bear in spots their was A bride and groom came with the mail to day we had three ladies to call on us this evening Saterday this mourning is verry fine I went down to fathers this day being verry hot the snow is goeing of verry fast their was an ox team went down the cove ice to day we was invited up to nabers S___S___ [ probably Stephen Scribner} this evening their we had the pleasure of seeing the girls and Bride and groom, we had a nice time. Sunday morning I started for my Uncle's at Long Island I got their before dinner in the after noon. I went to prayer meeting their. I saw old acquaintance and friends Monday I visited around that little village it has increased in size very fast for the few years past their is a large steam mill on the point three grocery stores two blacksmith shops taun house school house. Meeting house. church. other publick bildings on the after noon I started for home I had A long walk I got home before night it was hard walking the snow is nearly of the river is open as far as one can see the rapid ice is started I heard. Tuesday this day commences with rain it rained up till noon when it broke away and come around cold it will frose hevy to night smith went to A party I stayed home Wednesday this morning sun rose beautifull but did not stay so long it is snowing now Mother come up this morning to fix up for us. One of the upriver steamboats went down today the wood boats are beginning to sail I was to A choping frolic this after noon and hade a nice time. Thursday this morning is dark and foggy but cleared of by noon their was A steamboat went up to day I see the farmers is comenced plowing to day. Friday the sun rose beautifull but soon went under A cloud smith was out late last night and is complaining of being sick this mourning we had some few lady callers to day Saterday this is A fine mourning. business is verry driving to day I set A hen to day Sunday this mourning I started for up the Bellisle to se some old acquaintance it is A splendid day we/I are not going home to night Monday this mourning I start for home it is raining and the road is muddyI got home at half past eleven o'clock I heard today that two of the pasengers steamboats went up A friday the 26th April now we must lay aside our good clothes and prepare for work jest before night it cleared of and is A beautifull night for lodge I went to lodge and we had a very interesting time their was a good menny their. Tuesday sun raises beautifull we are to work verry hard to day for their is some 40 pairs to make but if we have luck we will soon have them through farmers are not doeing much at farming as yet we had two young ladies to make us A visit to day we were sorrow to see them go for we knew that we had to come to the cooking again Wednesday the first day of May it is A beautiful day this morning I went out to the store and bought some little articles. The road is quite dry to day Thursday this morning I start for Fredercton I got Abord at David Vanwart and steamed upstream I reached Fredercton at half past four in the afternoon I viseted around their till bedtime next mourning Friday I bought some little articles at 9 Oclock I took steamer for home it is raining verry hard today at one Oclock. I reached the landing place it is still raining verry hard at three Oclock I left D___V___ [David Vanwart] and walked over to fathers their I stoped till after teaThen I made another start for home I reached home just dark I am verry sick to day with A heavy cold Saterday it is dark and foggy this mourning. I am no better I keep my bed to day this after noon it clears of and is A beautifull afternoon, we had two lady's called to see us, their is Conference at the cove to day; I am not able to go. Smith is at work custermers is coming and goeing, to day it is quite busy times now Sunday it is raining verry hard to day Rev B_Merrett had meeting at the cove Meetinghouse twice to day Rev Springer had meeting at the bethuel [bethel?]I'm not able to go to ether place I am verry sick with A cold Smith went to meeting and their met his girl Monday it is still drisling I am not able to work Mother came up this mourning to put things to rites the Carpenter J__M__ is come to build my shop this afternoon Smith and him went to the woods to get the frame Rev B__ M__ [B. Merrett] called to see me to day Mother went home to night Tuesday this morning I had to go to work though not well the people is begining to hurry me this afternoon their was a wedding J__ P__ was married to a P__ K__ that is about al the poticulars of this day Wednesday my sister come out this mourning and staid all day their was two ladies called this afternoon My Cow had A calf last night Thursday the men is framing this mourning it is raining to day we rased the frame this after noon and named it the welth of Kars Friday the sun rose beautiful but soon went underit is now raining so that we cannot work out side Saterday passes without any thing verry interesting Sunday this mourning, I over slep my self which made me late for the orgination of the Sabbath School this after noon I went over to the bellisle to meeting I stayed all night with A friend Monday this mourning I went to fathers after dinner I went up to G__ V__ [Gabriel Vanwart] and had a nice time with the girls I now have to leave and go to the mill for shingles I went to lodge to night and we had a verry nice time Tuesday this day passes without aney thing verry interesting and I sold my Cow and calf for $30.00 Wednesday passes without A word Thursday this day I went to a vandue [probably vendue-obsolete French for a sale] and bought a set of harness this afternoon it snowes Friday this mourning it snowes this after noon my sister and Aunt came out here and made us a visit and put things to rites for us Saterday passes without A word Sunday this is the finest day we had this spring this mourning I went to Sunday school at the Cove their was A good many their I took dinner at fathers this after noon I was to Sunday School at the conner from thence I went to the cove there Rev B__ M__ [B. Merrett] preached their was A large gethering their was A Couple appeared out was married last week Miss R__ Erb to A gentleman I do not know his name Monday this morning I over slep myself and was routed by A custermer it is raining verry hard Smith went home Satterday and is not come to his work yet Smith came home at dark. Tuesday it is still raining the carpenter come at noon their is some farmers that has not got A seed in the ground yet Wednesday Thursday passes with rain Friday this mourning I started for A little village in Hamstead their I bought some little articles and started for home I got home just dark Saterday my mother came out this mourning it is quite fine till night it came on to rain verry hard Sunday to day is A fine day I went down to the cove sunday school in the afternoon I went up to the conner to sunday schoolMonday this day passes without word only it is lodge night and I went throughthe rain there was three joined and we had A verry nice time Tuesday the carpenter finished for A wile and left to day at noon the cost I will menchion some other time Wednesday we moved in the new shop and went to work we had some few callars to day it is cold for the time of year Thursday this morning sun rose beautifull but soon went under A cloud it was A verry good day for the farmers father planted his potatoes to day Friday this mourning I went down to fathers it is is dark this mourning this afternoon it it rains verry hard their was some custermers here to day verry much hurred for their work Saterday June 1 this mourning was dark with showers of rain this afternoon is fine Sunday this day is verry ranny I went down to sunday school and meeting this mourning and heard Rev B__ M__ [B. Merrett] preach yesterday I was to conference and we appointed delegates for the quartely meeting and they appointed me as clerk Monday passes without A word Tuesday this mourning I went to Kingston Smith my man went away Saterday and come back to day while I were away and he went home on A visit Wednesday this day commences with rain it rains all day Thursday it rains this mourning and clears up this afternoon I went this afternoon to my uncles at long Isiland their was some ladies and gentleman came to see me this afternoon I was sorry I was away but they stayed till I came home the parties came to see me About renting the place I told them the turms and they are to let me know this week wether they will take it or not Friday it is raining this mourning the farmers is having a verry hard time this spring planting their potatoes it raines all day by spells my sister came out this after noon it slacks raining tonight and she went home Saterday this day commences with rain at noon it cleared of for A short time my Mother and Aunt came out to day they stoped till after tea it looks as if it will rain before long it now is getting dark and the rain is coming on A gain Sunday this morning is beautifull I went to sunday school their were A quite A good menny their after sunday school I went down to fathers to dinner then I went to the conner to sundy school and prayer meeting from thence I went home to tea after tea I went out walking with some girls then I went down to the temperence hall to A union prayer meeting and so back home to bed Monday this mourning it looks dark I start for Kingston this mourning their was some five or six in the boat with me the rain comes on at Eleven Oclock I got to fathers at four Oclock from thence I went to neighbours P__ and neighbor E__ and from thence to the lodge room their being no one but my self and Another brother their on account of the rain Tuesday this mourning is still dark with mists of rain I am to work alone Smith is not come back yet, this afternoon we had A verry heavy shower of rain with heavy thunder and liting Wednesday this day is quite fine with some rain Smith come home to day but not to stay he left me to day to work Alone I an sorrow to see him go for the work is verry rushen Thursday this mourning is dark, last night we had some verry heavy thunder liting with heavy rain towards noon today is cleares of and the son is verry bright it rains again to night Friday this day is dark and rainey Saterday it clears of to day and is fine Sunday this as A beautifull day I was to sunday school at the cove and the conner I was to the cove to meeting and heard Rev B__ M__ [B. Merrett] Preach their was A good maney their Monday this is A verry fine day this after noon I went to Spring field Lodge and had A verry interesting time I stayed all night with A friend Tuesday this mourning I walked to hampton station and took the cars for Appahoca [Apohqui] station I visited that place and then I got a chance to Erbb settlement next mourning Wednesday I was drove to the County lodge room which was held at Milstream their I enjoyed my self verry well Thursday this mourning I went to susex after visiting that place I took the cars and went to Appahaca Again then I walked three miles out the villace and stoped the remainder of my visit Friday passes without A word Saterday the same Sunday this mourning I went to sunday school and Meeting Rev French Preached I went to dinner and their I got A quainted with A girl this after noon I went to meeting and heard Rev French Preach I took tea at the same place and also stayed all night [Mon] next mourning verry early I started for home I got A drive part way and footed it the rest way to the station I bought my ticket and steped Aboard the cars and went to St. John then back on the kars to quanpamsis [Quispamis] station and then I walked the rest part of the bay on foot I reached the lodge room jest after it opened we had A naise time their were not A great menny their on the account of meeting to the cove the weather is verry drying we haven't had aney rain for some time Tuesday passes without A word Wednesday dark with A little rain Thursday is very fine I had three ladies to call on me Friday this day is again fine Saterday another fine day I went to conference to day their were not menny their it thundered some this after-noon but no rain it has been very hot and dry for some time but every thing looks well their is heavy dues Sunday this mourning I went to Sunday school and meeting I heard Rev B__ M__ [B. Merrett] Preach their were A good menny their I took dinner and tea with my Uncle and stayed all night at fathers this day has been uncommon warm Monday fine in the mourning towards night heavy showers that did the provence more good than I Could Tuesday passes without A word Wednesday I had one lady caller Thursday this mourning is dark the men is begenning to meet to work roads this after noon their was a heavy thunder shower Friday this mourning is dark and raining I got A letter to day from A friend Saterday this mourning I start up the Bellisle to the district meeting it is verry hot to day Sunday their is a good menny to meeting to day I do not injoy my self verry well for I am sick their were 6 or 7 preachers their to day is warm Monday I was to the business meeting and then I came down with A friend and I walked over to Midland and back which was a long walk for me when I am sick I got back in time for lodge it has beenA fine day and verry hot Tuesday this mourning I wrote two letter for to send away and now I have to go to work to make up for lost time though I am not well yet Wednesday Thursday Friday passes without anything verry interisting Saterday this mourning I start for Long island to A Boat lanchen their was A good maney their and I had A good time Sunday I went to church and heard Rev Picket A church minister preach in the afternoon I went to Sunday School and Prayer Meeting Monday I walked home Tuesday Wednesday Thusday those three days passes without A word it being verry fine father come out to day and comenced haying for me I had three ladies to call to day Friday it is raining this mourning clears of at noon to night I went fishing, caught 36 gaspreaux Saterday I got my hay in to day Sunday I went to sunday school this mourning this after noon I went to sunday school and meeting Rev B__ M__ [B. Merrett] preached their were a good maney their this evening I went out A driving till quite late Monday this mourning is dark it looks like rain the farmers is hauling in their hay it rains this afternoon but is quite fine for Lodge their were but few their but we had a nice time Tuesday Wednesday Thursday those days passes without aney thing interisting Friday the mail brought me A Letter My Brother James came here to day he is home on A visit Saterday passes without A word Sunday this mourning I went over the river to A funeral which I heard at eleven Oclock but found it was not till one, I went and took dinner with A Brother Batchelor then went to the funeral but found it would not be preached untill next sunday I then started for home but stoped and took tea with some friends and came home Monday this mourning it is dark with a little shower but clears of and is fine it is A good hay day Tuesday this morning is raining verry hard and it is an all day rain Wednesday thursday (Aug 1st) Friday Saterday those days passses without aney thing spechel Sunday this morning I went to sunday school and meeting Rev B__ M__ [B. Merrett] preached this afternoon I went over the river to meeting and heard the same minister preach Monday this afternoon I went to A frolic this evening I went to Lodge their were a good maney their we had A verry interisting time Tuesday this day passes without A word spechel Wednesday not A word Thursday this morning I hired A horse and wentt up the Bellisle It came on to raining I drove in A__ V__ Barn and took dinner with him and stoped till after tea then I went to white's corner and their I halted I dalled at the post Office and got two letters and Book which I entend to bee agent for I drove up to J__ K__ aquaintance and stayed all night Friday this morning I drove down to hampton to nomination their was A great number of people their towards evening I started for home I ferried over the Bellisle Bay and came home Saterday this morning I started to help neighbor S__ S__ [Stephen Scribner] get his hay in this after noon I worked on the bench Sunday this morning I went to Sunday school took dinner and tea with A friend and went home Monday this mourning is dark with some rain clears of and is fine this evening I went to Lodge at Springfield we had A verry nice time I wated upon a girl home Tuesday this moring is dark and rainy their is A great time canvassing it is near lection times their was a lector at the hall last night by Mr. Mcredy Wednesday I was routed out of bed this mourning by the canviser's I ate my breakfast in A hurry and had A drive up to the lecton we had A very noisy time their was rum brought and some got drunk and wanted to fight I had my dinner and tea give me and A drive home again Thusday this mourning I went out A canvissing with A Book I got 10 subscribers I took A quite A drive through the rain Friday this mourning I went down to fathers it is dark and rainey I wrote two letters and sent them in the mail after dinner I came home and went to work Saterday this mourning It is raining verry hard I went to A funeral of my John Jones who died Aug 15th 1872 Rev Picket A church minister preached it is still raining verry hard Sunday is quite fine I went to Sunday school and to meeting in the after-noon Rev B__ M__ [B. Merrett] preached Monday.Tuesday. Wednesday Thursday. Friday these days passes without Aneything very interisting Saterday this morning I went to kingston and Back and up to Unckle Williams at Long island I got their after dark Sunday this morning I went to church afternoon I went to meeting and sunday School Rev B__ M__ [B. Merrett] preached to day is very hot Monday this morning is dark their was very heavy rain and thinder last night this after-noon I start for home Tuesday this mourning I commence work I must hurry and shove the work through for I am A goeing to leave it is raining thro afternoon I left on the 1st sep 1872 as An agent for books maps pictures I continue at the sale of them of and on all the fall and the first of the winter I have not been doeing much I feel as I must get to work soon at something I have A notion to go in the store business if I can get the stamps is not I must do something else the snow is verry deep for the time of year on the 24th Dec the natives had to turn out to break roads is is very cold and blustering on christmas it is still cold with heavy snows and blows this mourning is Thursday the roads is blocked up with snow the people is having A hard time braking roads it has diseppointed me for I laid out to go to Jerusalem to tend A county lodge our county lodge meets at our lodge tomorrow I fear that their will not bee many to attend on the acount of bad roads On jan 10th I started for St. John Saterday I took the train for appohaqua I visited around the station A few houers then got A drive A few miles to A friends house which I stopped over Sunday I were to meeting and heard Rev Sharo preach I was to sunday school on Monday I were to Lodge at that place on tuesday I visided A nother friend on Wednesday I had A drive to upper sessex where I viseted around that place sussex is A quite A business place they are A starting A shoe facture which they will employ one hundred men and fifty girls on thirsday I took the kars and went to St John their I lernt that one of my neighbors had brought A load of hay for me which they sold for $13 per tun towards evening we started for home we got home in the evening and it is well we did for this mourning friday is raining very hard the snow is goeing of very fast the first of the winter is was verry deep now it is almost gone some time passes without aney thing verry interisting Monday 20 we met for lodge to night their were some 50 their tuesday their were A fueneral at the cove meeting-house the child of E. Gerem this evening we had meeting two preachers were there Rev B__ M__ [B. Merrett] and T__ C__ there were A quite A good many to night it rained very heavy wendsday to day it is snowing
********************************************************************six months had roled around since I have kept any record yet I will try and tell you the peticulars the last of febuary 1873 I went to St. John and took Cars for Susex I comenced work in the shoe factore in that place I borded with C__ S__ A friend of mine I work away I done verry well after About 2 months I borded with A nother man T__ S(?)__ I poot in verry goods times In the spring Alvin Smith came their and we worked together I use to take A trip in the Cars quite often I took A drive up the head of Millstream on the 9th of May I went homeI stopt two or threes days and went bach on the 21st 1873 I got married to A girl in lower susex by the name of S__ E__ [Sarah Erb next day I hired A man to drive us down home A--S-- [Alvin Smith] come with us we stoped down till the 27th and went back on the next day I went to Susex to work she stoped home I worked untill the 17th June when I moved down home to make preperation for work I went to work all alone I could not get aney one to help me as yet I am comenced life some diferent from before I have got to work pretty hard and saven for I am in debt some $150 dollars I have got things around me quite comfortable I have got A barn frame up
