BIOGRAPHY: STEPHEN COLLETT was born at Melksham around 1817. By 1841 he was living at Woodrow Tything in Melksham as a woollen weaver and twenty years on he was livingat Broughton Road in Melksham where he was an agricultural labourer.

BIOGRAPHY: He was married to (1) Grace Brinsdon and they had ten children including George born in 1840, John born in 1848, William born in 1849, Thomas born in 1854 and Frederick born in 1858.

BIOGRAPHY:According to the 1881 Census Stephen was a gardener aged 64 and was born at Melksham. Although he was stated as still being married in 1881, Stephen’s wife Grace has not been located anyway in that year’s census records.

BIOGRAPHY: Living with him though in 1881 were his two youngest children Emily aged 9 and Sidney aged 6, both born at Melksham. Theage of these two children mean that they were not likely to be Grace’s childrenas she would have been in her mid-fifties at their birth and perhaps this indicates that Stephen was married twice.

BIOGRAPHY: And considering the fourteen year gap between children Frederick and Emily, it seems most likely that wife Grace died after the birth of Frederick,leaving Stephen free to marry (2) a younger woman with whom he later had the youngest children Emily and Sidney.
