Person:Stephen Bailey (18)

Identity

Many assume he was the son of Edmond and Sally Bailey (his grandparents), but the evidence doesn't support that. He wasn't in their household in the 1850 census, nor in the list of their children in the NEHGR transcript of the family record (NEHGR 88:235). He was first in the Ruth Gleason household and then the Sylvanus household in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. This strongly suggests that Stephen was the son of Edmond Bailey Jr and Lydia Gleason (Ruth's daughter and Sylvanus's sister).

   It is not certain that the Stephen E Bailey (shoe maker) listed here is the same person as the Stephen D Bailey (shoe maker) listed in the Sylvanus and Percis Gleason household. However, it seems likely that they were the same person. Stephen D Bailey was a nephew of both Lorenzo and Sylvanus.
