On 10 April 1844 the representatives of the Burger Council in Potchefstroom, including Stephanus Petrus, signed a letter adressed to the Volksraad in Pietermaritzburg stating that they are not willing to negotiate with the British Queen. They considered themselves free men and stated that they will continue with the Burger Council of all citizens up to the Groot River. References
