Facts and Events
Stanley Wood, my father, lost his mother at around age seven. At some point he was "farmed out" to a farmer up near Bay Village, MI, near Petosky. I don't know how long he lived there. He entered the army at age 16 and fought in France in WWI with the First Infantry Division. He was wounded in the foot and in the lung by mustard gas. He spent a long time in hospital in France and England. My cousin, Ava Wickham, told me that Stanley's two oldest daughter's, Lucienne and Jacquelin (Jackie), were named after two French nurses that cared for him. She also said that Jackie's middle name, Ava, was from her. Stanley married my mother not too long after he was discharged from the army. Stanley was an independent sort, preferring to be self-employed when he could rather than work for someone else. Hence, he did a lot of different work. On the birth certificates of each of his 12 childern he seemed to have a different occupation. Physically he was a very large man, standing 6' 6", though he could not be described as overweight. He was well known for his strength. He had dark hair. My own memories of him are quite vague since he died of a massive heart attack at age 50 when I was 6 years old. I know he loved hunting and fishing. I remember going mushrooming with him once. He bought 40 arces of swampy forest on Old State Rd. just before he died and built a house there. He died before it was finished but we lived in the finished part. After my Mother's death the place was bought by the Walkington family which lived there many years. Each of his eight sons all were 6' or over.
1930 Census of Belvidere Twp., Montcalm Co., MI Age of marriage of Stanley and Vera was given as 20 and 16 respetively. It states that they rented a dwelling for $5.00/month, He was a WW I vet and was working at the time as a general laborer. References
