Stanley Pugh Jones was born on 16th November 1889 at Llanelli in Carmarthenshire, son of Mary Jones, formerly Griffiths, and her husband Thomas Pugh Jones, a mason, builder, contractor, and building materials merchant. Stanley's birth certificate and baptism simply called him Stanley Jones, but he later added his father's middle name to become Stanley Pugh Jones, sometimes with Pugh treated as a middle name, sometimes as a double-barrelled surname of Pugh-Jones (as he signed himself at his marriage).
Stanley appears in the 1891 census living with his parents and siblings at 25 Gilbert Road in Llanelli (or Llanelly as it was generally spelt at the time). By 1901 they had moved to Marshfield Villa on Marsh Street, and by 1911 they had moved again to Gathen House, by which time Stanley was working as an accountant in a builder's office, quite likely working for his father's business. The censuses also note that Stanley's family all spoke both Welsh and English.
In the First World War, Stanley served in the army in Egypt. He served as a lieutenant and was promoted to being a captain.
Whilst the war was still going on, Stanley married Gertrude Cordelia Timothy. They married on 12th March 1917 at St Nicholas' Church in Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, where she lived with her parents. They had one son, Peter Stanley Pugh-Jones, who was born in Great Yarmouth later that same year.
Stanley and Gertrude later returned to Llanelli, and Stanley followed his father's trade, describing himself as a building material merchant. At the outbreak of the Second World War Stanley and Gertrude living at a house called Bronygarth on Hendre Road in Llanelli Rural parish, just outside the town itself.
Stanley and Gertrude's son Peter also joined the armed forces, presumably serving during the Second World War, as after the war he described himself as a major. He became a solicitor, appears to have married and had a son shortly after the war, then emigrated with his wife and son to South Africa in 1948. However, Peter died in South Africa in 1951, aged about 34.
Gertrude died in 1964, aged 73. Peter survived her by about two years. Immediately before his death he was living in the seaside resort of Tenby in Pembrokeshire. He died on 25th November 1966 at the Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen, aged 77.
