GARNER SQUIRE 56 M W IL CA BUTTE CHICO TWP 1870
Garner Whtieside, Squire Ann R. Garner, Squire Whtieside, Ann R. 31 Dec 1839 Illinois
Carroll County
A son of Francis and Amelia Garner came to Butte County and settled on a
ranch north of Chico. His name was Squire Garner. Squires son John Mortimer
Garner married Celestia Jane "Lessie" Signor. Her brother Johnny Signor
married my Grandmother Harriet May Thompson, daughter of John and Mariah.
They had two children Lessie and Volna. Johnny Signor had a brother Eli who
went to Wyoming and talked Johnny and my grandmother into moving there. Well,
they did. Years later Johnny was shot for horse stealing, paper says
pneumonia but he was shot and crawled into a wet cabin and caught pneumonia
and that's what he died of. Then she married my Grandpa Root and had three
more children. For years we knew the Garner's were related but didn't know
how. Now I know how.
Susannah and John Bolin Whitesides owned a home right down the street
from the Garner ranch, infact that is where John and Mariah were married.
Later on in years a school was built on the Whitesides property called Shasta
Union School. The first old school was bought by Uel Garner, son of Celestia
Jane "Lessie" and John Mortimer Garner moved about 500 yards down by Mudd
Creek and he lived in it until it burned. Infact his grandchildren lived in
that old one room cabin. I can still see it today.--Virginia Dee Roots 28 January 2002
