Notes for SIMON AERTSZEN DEHART: Symon was baptized on October 11, 1643 at Nieuwkoop, South Holland. He immigrated to the United States at age 21 in 1664, arriving in New Amsterdam on the ship "Calderland" even before it became New York (source: Jenkins, G.C., Appalachian Pioneers). His sister Lysbeth came with him, and Symon purchased 300 acres in Brooklyn along with two Negro slaves. He built a stone house which was located on the shore of Gowanus Cove that stood for two centuries. He acquired a 30 acre farm from Thos. Franzen at Gowanus, according to a deed dated 2 March 1674. Simon himself did not use the DeHart Surname, but simply referred to himself as Symon, son of Aert. On September 30, 1687 he took the oath of allegiance to the English monarchy at Breucklijn, Kings Co, NY (source: Meyers, Carol M., Early New York State Census Records, 1663 - 1772, Gardena, CA: RAM Publishers, 1965), and he was appointed city commissioner in 1688. However, on 14 Sept 1697, he was involved in an act of rebellion when several Dutchmen defaced the King's arms hanging at the courthouse of Kings. Simon is listed as "Simon Aerson" on a census of Kings County, about 1698 in the town of "Brookland" (Kings Co, NY). In his household were: 2 white males above 10 years; 3 white females above 10 years; 2 white females under 10 years; 6 black males above 10 years; 2 black males under 10 years; 3 black females above 10 years; 2 black females under 10 years (Meyers, 1965).
