Facts and Events
Simeon Hunt "of Coventry, Ct." (and moved to Norwich, VT, where he died) b. July 8, 1751, son of Simeon Hunt of Coventry, Ct., and brother of Eliphaz (the father of Eliphaz of Hartford, VT,) m.______(prob. the Anna Hunt, widow, who died at Hartford May 23, 1810), had eight children, some, at least, born at Tolland, Ct. Simeon died at Norwich, VT, April 28 or May 29, 1810 (two cards in Vermont Vital Records with different dates, probably April 28 in that his presumed wife Anna died in May as a widow). Children shown by Wyman (p. 188): 1. Reuben, b. 1770, of Norwich, VT, and Fairfax, VT,, m. 22 Feb. 1801 at Norwich, VT,, or Strafford, VT,, (records at both places) Abigail (Nabby) Hunt, dau. of Solomon Hunt of Strafford and Norwich. Reuben died at Fairfax in 1847, his Will executed 20 Jan. 1847, probably soon before his death. Reuben Hunt, Jr., was named executor of the Will. Not mentioned in the Will was wife Abigail who is presumed to have died before 1847, nor the oldest daughter Harriet who appears to have m. twice and may also have died before her father. 2. Chauncy. Wyman says "living in 1862, unmarried" but this appears to be the Chauncy Hunt, b. Tolland, CT ca. 1784, who m. Eunice Burton or Benton at Norwich, VT, Feb. 2, 1809 and died at Norwich, VT, April 7, 1862 at age 77 yrs, 10 mos, and Eunice, wife of "Chancey" Hunt lived until Jan. 28, 1863 when she died in Norwich. 3. Simeon, "of New York" who had children.
6. Pamela Hunt, m. George Gates. 7. Luther Hunt, b. Jan. 27, 1789, "of Worcester, VT", m. 7 Oct. 1821 Jane Paul (sic., probably Pearl) Abbot who was b. 2 June 1800 and died 18 June 1845. Luther died 18 June 1840. Had five children. 8. Elijah Hunt (died at Norwich April 18, 1810 at age 18 per VVR). 9. John Hunt (not shown by Wyman, see death at Norwich 181?) I am not related, but was trying to help someone else with a query involving Warren County, Illinois. They too are looking for the family of Simon L. Hunt and his wife, Lorinda Metcalf. You mentioned Joseph as a possible brother to Carlton Hunt. I have not found Joseph in the records yet, but wanted to mention others that I believe were the siblings of Carlton Hunt. In the 1850 census, Eugene R. Hunt is living with his apparent brother, Carlton, in Peoria County. Eugene married Harriet Green in Porter County, Indiana during 1853. There is no apparent reason why they married there, as Harriet's family was also listed in the 1850 census of Peoria County (David and Anna Green, their children, all born in New York). By 1880, Eugene was living in Kewanee, Henry County, Illinois. His neighbors were John Hughes and his wife, Rejoice Green, a sister of Harriet Green. Eugene was said to have died in October 1887, and that may have been in Kewanee. Of Eugene's three children, only daughter Jennie Ann lived to adulthood. She married Oscar Olaf Andersen in Warren County, Illinois on 23 June 1877. I think the railroad had some influence in this marriage. Dewitt C. (Clinton?) Hunt married Catharine Brownfield in Peoria County during 1848. By 1860, Dewitt is living in Farmington, Fulton County, Illinois. He enlisted during the Civil War, and was killed at Jackson, Tennessee in 1862. I did not find a pension listed for his widow or minor children, but may have missed it. I did not find them immediately in later census records, either. There seems to be others named Dewitt Clinton Hunt with ties to New York, which may suggest a common ancestor. The name Clinton does appear frequently in the family. Frances H. Hunt married Henry Ross in Peoria County on 3 July 1851. Others have Frances as the daughter of Simon and Lorinda, and born in Bethany, Genesee County, NY during 1831. I have not been able to find Frances or her husband in later census records. Freedom Z. (Zemina or Zewery?) Hunt married Shepherd Green in Peoria County during 1854. Shepherd was a brother to both Harriet Green Hunt and Rejoice Green Hughes, mentioned above. They moved into Stark County by the 1870 census, with the remainder of the (orphaned?) Green children as neighbors. By 1880, they are in Adair County, Iowa. Freedom, her husband, and one son are buried in neighboring Menlo, Guthrie County, Iowa - Lot 71 of Menlo Cemetery, Guthrie Co., Iowa: Shephard GREEN, 30 Jan 1831 to 22 Mar 1900; C. W. Vet.; h/o Freedom Z. Freedom Z. GREEN, 03 Apr 1834 to 21 Oct 1921; w/o Shepherd Clinton GREEN, 1860 to 1927 Emily Hunt married James C. Hitchcock in Peoria County on 7 November 1844. She was born in New York about 1825. In the 1850 census, there is a Thomas Hunt with the family, born in New York about 1831. The Hitchcock household was neighbors to Dewitt Hunt in the 1850 census, and I would bet they were related. James C. Hitchcock and family also moved to Adair County, Iowa, but by 1870. They were founding members of a church in Menlo, Guthrie County, Iowa. I think this may add weight to the evidence that Emily and Freedom were sisters, although it is still just circumstantial. I have not found Thomas Hunt in later records yet. I may try again, as I just haven't spent much time looking for him yet. Note that Emily Hunt married in Illinois during 1844, while her likely brother, Carlton Hunt married Emily MESSENGER, (b. abt. 1825 in NY) on 17 July 1843 in Harmony, Chautauqua, New York. Carlton married a second time in Peoria County. Carlton's first child was born in New York about 1846, indicating he did not join others of the family already in Peoria County until later, but sometime before 1850. It's impossible to guess when the rest of the likely siblings came to Peoria County, or if they were possibly accompanied by one or both of their parents. References
