Known and Disputed Lineage

Siegfried is known to be the son of Cunigunda, but the identity of his father is unknown[3]. Cawley[3] speculates he was the son of an unknown third husband of Cunigunda, although allows that he might have been the son of Wigerich (her first husband). According to the German Wikipedia article[5], René Klein speculates that the unknown third husband was Giselbert, later Duke of Lorraine.

Sigfried (or Siegfried) ( – 28 October 998) was Count in the Ardennes, and is known in European historiography as founder and first ruler of the Castle of Luxembourg in 963 AD, and ancestor and predecessor of the future counts and dukes of Luxembourg. He was also an advocate of the abbeys of St. Maximin in Trier and Saint Willibrord in Echternach.

His male-line descendants are known as the House of Luxembourg, or House of Ardenne–Luxembourg, and his descendants would become the Counts of Luxembourg.

The discussion immediately above this entry notes that there were sources identifying his mother as Cunigonde, but no primary source identifying his father. Cawley speculates that Cunigonde married a third time, and that Siegfried was the son of this third husband.

Cawley estimates his birth year to be between 925 and 935, unless he was the son of Wigerich, Cunigonde's second husband, in which case he estimates it to be between 915 and 919.

Graf Siegfried I. (* um 918/929[1]; † wohl 28.

  6. Wikipedia's around the world seem to differ on the parents of Siegfried. There seems to be consensus on his mother, but not on his father.
