Facts and Events
What follows is from Eugene W. Harper in January 2005: "As to Sid Harper. His middle initial was A. The story he tells is that he did not have a middle name. In 1938 or so he joined the Army Air Force. Since he was a mechanic, he was sent to the high deserts of northern India where he worked on aircraft that flew over 'the Hump' to supply the Flying Tigers. It was supposed to be a secret operation. He suffered a sunstroke and after that he always had a trimmer in his hands. While his name was Sid, the military called him Sydney and insisted that he tell what his middle name was. He kept explaining that he had no middle name as he was transferred from assignment to assignment. Finally, he got to Sydney, Australia and got fed up with it all. He decided to say he was Sydney A. Harper. The A. was for Australia." References
