Personal History
Sherebiah Scarlett, son of Newman Scarlet and Molly (Merrill), was born 5 August 1787, in Tewksbury, Massachusetts.[1][2] He died intestate 30 July 1840, in the same place, of drowning,[3] and was buried in Tewksbury Cemetery.[4]
Sherebiah Scarlet and Olive Levingston were married 31 May 1807, in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. The births of their children appear in the town records of Tewksbury.
Sherebiah's second wife Polly, whose maiden name is unknown, may have been the sister of his first wife Olive. (No marriage record has been found.) The births of their children appear in the town records of Tewksbury.
On 13 October 1840,[5] in the probate court of Middlesex Co., Caleb Livingston of Tewksbury was appointed administrator of the estate of Sherebiah Scarlett, yeoman, and he, along with Thomas Hopkinson of Lowell and Peter Clark of Tewksbury, yeomen, signed a bond in the amount of $10,000. Peter Clark, Enoch Foster, and Zephaniah Clark Jr. had taken an inventory of the estate on 26 September 1840, with the real estate, including the homestead lot of 72 acres and additional lots of 42 acres, valued at $2040 and personal estate valued $608.95. Polly Scarlett, widow of Sherebiah, was granted an allowance of $300 from the personal estate, and on 17 November 1840, an inventory of her dower from the real estate was taken and valued at $686.
Polly remained guardian of their three minor children, Mary, Susan, and Jackson, and the entire portion of the estate excluding the widow's dower was sold at public auction on 12 July 1841.[6]
