"Philip and William Stoops, brothers, came as Pioneers from Pennsylvania and settled in Nicholas County, Kentucky... William Stoops, the Pioneer, was married three times...By third wife [Sarah Warren] two daughters -- Maria and Hester...Maria married Harvey Adkins -- had two children -- both died before her.  There is a Sarah Stoops listed in the 1830 census in Nicholas Co. It is possible she remarried after 1830.
 It is also possible she is the Sarah Stoops listed with John Stoops in Nicholas Co., Kentucky. She would be his great-aunt.
 In the 1850 census for Nicholas Co., Kentucky, John Stoops is a farmer, age 34 from Kentucky, with $1,500.  His wife Ellen A. is 30, and their children are Alexander B., 8; and Miranda, 3.  Also in the household are Sarah Stoops, 64 from Maryland,  Maria Stoops 30 from Kentucky and William Bowen, age 22, laborer from Kentucky.  {p.455 a & B; Nicholas Co Kentucky Archives, <www.rootsweb.com/census>} NOTE: He is the only Stoops household left in Nicholas Co. 
 In the 1860 census for Carlisle, Nicholas Co., Kentucky, John Stoops is 42, farmer with $13,000; E. A. is 39; A. B. 17; Maranda 13; W. E. 7 -- all born Kentucky; and Sarah Stoops 72 born Maryland. {p. 302}
