Sarah Jane Toms was born in Newport (now Fountain City) Wayne county, Ind., October 4, 1839, and died January 3, 1892, aged 52 years, 4 months and 25 days. In 1811 her parents moved from Newport to Cincinnati, where they remained until 1817 when they returned to Wayne county. With the exception of one year at Titusville, Pa., her entire life since 1847 has been spent in Cambridge City. December 13, 1865, she was married to John S. Pitman, who died August 28, 1873. She united with the Baptist church a number of years ago, and was a consistent memter until the end of her life. as a neighbor, a friend, an associate, a warm hearted and true chrisian, she may possibly have had an equal but no superior; always ready to assist the sick or needy, contribute to the relief of the destitute, and in many ways rendered smooth and pleasant the pathway of life of every friend and neighbor. She was a kind and affectionate mother, a loving and sympathetic daughter, totally unselfish in every walk of life, thinking always of the welfare of others rather than her own. We feel that such a life has not been spent in vain and her reward awaits her on the other shore. The funeral occurred on Tuesday afternoon from the residence of her father, Edgar Toms. Services were conducted by Rev. Markland. Interment in Riverside.
