In Cuyler, Cortland Co., N. Y., Feb. 4th, 1881, of complicated disease, Mrs. Sarah E. Spencer Burdick, wife of Joseph L. Burdick, aged 64 years, 9 months, and 16 days.
Sister B. was born in Marlborough, Conn., and, upon the death of her father, was adopted by her uncle, the late Dyer Saxton, with whom, at the age of ten years, she came to the town of DeRuyter, where, and at the place of her death, she spent the balance of her life. At the age of fifteen, she made a profession of religion, and united with the First-day Baptist Church in the village of DeRuyter. From the time of her marriage, Sept. 22d, 1836, she observed the Sabbath, never, however, uniting with the Seventh-day Baptist Church in the village until 1854. She was social and affable in her manners, and withal a devoted Christian worker. She lived to see four of her five children and husband identified with the Church as Christian laborers. Although for four months she was a great sufferer, she was patient and resigned, and, with the apostle, she “longed to depart and be with Jesus, which is far better.” A large congregation testified their esteem for her by their presence and the falling tear on the occasion of her funeral.
