Sarah scriggins was a remarkable woman and one well fitted for frontier life. After Benjamins death she married, July 12, 1788, a man named Stephen Washburn on 12 July 1788 in New Gloucester, who lived but a few years and she was ever afterward known as "Granny Washburn". She lived to be more than ninety years of age, and many of the tales she told of the early struggles and hardships are wellrememberedby her descendants. She was often left alone with her children for long periods while her husband was away on hunting expeditions and in the army, but she had a wonderful faculty of keeping the goodwill of the Indians, and is said to have not found it necessary to retire to the block house for safety but once.
