Sarah Razell’s origins have yet to be established for certain. As an adult she said she had been born around 1773 at Warnham in Sussex.

On 28th November 1791, Sarah married William Snelling at Worth. They went on to have a son, Thomas, baptised at Worth a couple of months later, but sadly he died as a baby.

Sarah and William then moved to the neighbouring parish of Crawley, where William was from, where they had another ten children baptised between 1793 and 1815. William worked as a tallow chandler.

Sarah’s eldest daughter married in 1811, and her first known grandchild was born the following year.

Sarah’s youngest daughter died at the age of three in 1819.

William died in December 1830, aged 63. They had been married for 39 years.

The 1841 census finds Sarah living with her daughter Sophia and Sophia’s children at West Green, on the west side of the village of Crawley but in the neighbouring parish of Ifield. Sarah appears to have lived for the rest of her life with Sophia and her family, also appearing together in the 1851 census at West Green and in the 1861 census at Crawley Street (another part of the built up area of Crawley village that spilled over into Ifield parish). In 1851 Sarah was described as an annuitant, indicating that she was in receipt of an annuity or pension.

Sarah’s youngest son, Edwin, died in 1868, aged 56.

Sarah died in 1869, when she was said to be a remarkable 96 years old. She was buried at Crawley on 15th August 1869. She had outlived William by nearly 39 years. She had seen many grandchildren born in her lifetime and was also a great grandmother.

Baptized / 1773 / March 27th Sarah Daughter of James & Sarah Razell

This would appear to be the most likely baptism, being in the same parish that the adult Sarah gave as her birthplace in the 1851 census, and at about the right time. However, it is worth noting that there was a Sarah Razzell who married at Warnham in 1798 (to a Francis Longhurst), suggesting that there were two similarly aged Sarah Razells from Warnham. Further evidence needed to be confident.
