    1805 / Feb[ruar]y 10. Baptized Lewis, Son of W[illia]m & Sarah Snelling, born Nov[embe]r 28.

Although baptised as 'Lewis', he signed his name 'Louis' when he married and most records give his name as 'Louis'. The fact that a minority of records give his name as 'Lewis' though does suggest that he used the English pronunciation with the 's' sounded rather than the French pronunciation with the 's' silent.
