MRS. NETTIE BIXLER DIES AT AGE OF 106
Mrs. Sarah Jeannette (Nettie) Bixler, 106, formerly of Bluffton and widow of John A. Bixler, died at 10:15 p.m. Thursday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Harry (Bessie) Fetters of Carey, O., with whom she reisded.
Mrs. Bixler's health had always been good considering her advanced age and although blind for a number of years, she had been able to be up and to care for herself. Her memory was clear and she was able to quote from memory much of the Bible.
The daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth M. Bayman Prillaman, Mrs. Bixler was born Feb. 22, 1858 on a farm three miles east of Bluffton that was settled in 1838 by her grandfather, William Prillaman, who was a state representative in 1841. Her father, the first Republican elected as a county commissioner, was the second school teacher in Wells County.
Her marriage to Mr. Bixler, who died July 17, 1927, took place May 15, 1879.
Mrs. Bixler was a seamstress and lived in an apartment above the present Hirsch Store until 1947 when she moved to Carey to reside with her daughter. She was the oldest member of the First Baptist Church, both in years of membership and age. Surviving, in addition to the daughter, are a brother, John Prillaman of Joliet, Ill.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A son, Garfield, who resided in Los Angeles, Calif., died in 1963.
Friends may call after 7 p.m. Saturday at the McBride Funeral Home.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Rev. Earl Gross officiating. Burial will be in the Six Mile Cemetery.Bluffton News Banner
