Identity

The 2nd wife of Capt. John has uniformly been identified as Sarah Mosely and most do not mention her parentage. Torrey states that Sarah Trescott (1662- ) married Increase Modsley (1663-1690) and upon his death to John Peabody in 1703. Ancestry of Katherine Choate Paul (p 79) states that Sarah Trescott, dau of William Trescott of Dorchester, married 1st Increase Mosely or Modsley, and second William Peabody of Boxford. The Moseley Gen (Gen Sketches) states Sarah Trescott, dau of William of Dorchester, married Increase Mosely; she died without issue, and Increase married 2nd Hannah Weeks. Cutter (Gen Per Memoirs Mass 3:2000) states Ebenezer Mosely married 1st Elizabeth Trescott (dau of William) and then Hannah Weeks. Stearns (Gen Fam NH 3:990) agrees with Cutter.
There is significant disagreement concerning the identity of Sarah Mosely and her marriages. It is likely she was a widow given the advance age of Capt John in 1703 (age approx 61). She is of age to be the dau of William Trescott, however, the marriage record for Sarah Trescott is unclear. It is interesting that the published Dorchester VR does not read "Mrs. Sarah Mosely" or indicate a prior marriage. At this time, all that can be said of her is that her name on the records is Sarah Mosely.
