Sarah Margaret McClaugherty was born on 19 August 1831, in Giles, Virginia, United States, her father, John McClaugherty, was 48 and her mother, Sarah "Sallie" Walker, was 38. She married William B. Vass on 29 January 1851. They were the parents of at least 1 daughter. She died in 1855, at the age of 24.
