“Mrs. Sarah Knox Kennedy, 85 years old is dead at her late residence, Park and Sturgeon streets, Allegheny. She was born in Cadiz, O., March 9, 1820, a daughter of Rev. William and Esther Tingley Knox, her father being a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church. She was married July 23, 1846 to James W. Kennedy, of Pittsburg [sic], who was publisher at that time of the “Alleghenian”, subsequently of the “Kennedy Bank Note Detector” and of the Pittsburgh “Chronicle”, since merged into the “Chronicle-Telegraph”, and a business man in various pursuits at the time of his death, December 25, 1871. Mrs. Kennedy is the last survivor of a number of brothers and sisters of the Knox family, distinguished in the Methodist Episcopal church, most prominent of which was Rev. Jeremiah Knox, founder of Knoxville, this city. She was a cousin of the late Bishop Matthew Simpson, the aunt of Senator Philander C. Knox, and also of Prof. Jeremiah Tingley, of Allegheny. She is survived by four of seven children, ex-Senator Arthur Kennedy, Mrs. George G. Boardman, of New York, and the Misses Inez and Temple Kennedy. She was a member of the Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church, Allegheny.”
