"Sacred to the memory of Sarah Johnson Ellis, daughter of Samuel Johnson and Olivia Ann Kershaw, beloved wife of John Ellis, born May 17, 1776, departed this life 1847." A second stone, on the ground, reads "Reared in the period following the Revolution, she developed an unusually strong character, tempered with such kindliness that it drew all hearts to her. A firm Christian, a faithful wife, a devoted mother to her four sons and five daughters, she fulfilled well the duties of life, and left many descendants, who arise and call her blessed." This stone, as viewable at findagrave.com, is an old stone and, in my opinion, was either placed by her son Stephen Ellis (who lived near the cemetery and who died in 1869) or by one/some of his children. The eulogy fairly clearly indicates that the person(s) who placed the stone knew her. The tombstone is incorrect with respect to the maiden name of her mother. [submitted by Bevin Creel]
