  4. 4.0 4.1 Letter from the California Historian of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.

A letter dated Sep 25 1946 from Charles Francis Griffin, M.D. State Historian of California discussing the application of Professor Leonard Benedict Loeb states that the birth date given on her burial monument (Oct. 27, 1749) was exactly 9 days after her recorded birth and therefore likely her baptism date. A letter from the town clerk states that there was no Sarah Howe born Oct. 27 1749. The Clerk reports "Children of Thomas & Deborah Howes" "Sarah Howes was born October 18th 1749" from Book 3 p 91 of Yarmouth records. In a second letter dated August 4, 1945 he further states that he can not explain away the tombstone inscrition (first paragraph p 2) and therefore gave the application his approval. "I believe the General Society will make no mistake in approving again the lineage of William Brewster." The application was approved. GSMD 16,290, CA # 1,592. Side Note - what puzzles me is that both she and her husband's birth dates were off by approximately the same number of days. In the 1752 calendar change eleven days were eliminated. Not once was this fact acknowledged by either Historian in their correspondence as a possible explanation.
