Facts and Events
- George Hogg Sr. also had a daughter named Sarah. Various researchers who have posted information on webpages refer to her as the daughter of George and Ann. Ann Humphrey was George’s third wife and they were not married until 1716, so Ann Humphrey could not be Sarah’s mother.
- At least two researchers have posted that Sarah Hogg married George Gregg at Newark Monthly Meeting (Quaker) on the second day of the first month of 1706. I believe this translates into our present day calendar as March 2, 1706. Assuming Sarah was at least 18 at marriage in March 1706, she would have been born in or before March 1688. Therefore, there is a possibility that Sarah was the daughter of George “senior” and his second wife, Dorcas, IF they were married by about June 1687 (within about three months after she became administrator of her late husband’s estate, so certainly within six months of his death). I know that widows, especially those with young children, remarried quickly out of financial necessity. Dorcas, however, had her parents nearby and may not have had to rush into a second marriage.
- If Sarah Hogg was older than 19 when she married in March 1706, then she would almost certainly have to be the daughter of the first wife of George Sr.
- Researchers report that George Gregg was born in 1674 and did not marry Sarah Hogg until 1706, when he was about 32. It is possible that she was his second wife, or, it is also possible that they married at an older age. While Sarah was almost certainly younger than her husband, she might not have been as much as 14 years younger (i.e., if she were born as late as March 1688). Therefore, I would estimate, as a THEORY, that Sarah Hogg was born between about 1675 and 1685, with 1680-1685 being the most likely.
