Sarah reportedly was unwell much of the time & suffered terrible headaches. She left Willard & their son, Billy, when he was 2yrs. Billy went to live with grandparents. Sarah returned to Detroit & married Stephen Butler. After 5 or 6 children she committed suicide in 1878, aged 40yrs. Her obituary described how she had slit her throat 'from ear to ear' with a razor after complaining of unremitting 'violent headaches'.
