The Sarah Frances Clayton herein was originally Sarah Frances Eberman and first married to John Greenwood, another son of Caleb, in Atchison County, Missouri in December 1847 after he had returned from the Bear Flag Revolt in California. She later divorced him. Her brother Ninian Alkanah Eberman was an 1843 pioneer of Oregon, and another brother William "Crockett" Eberman arrived in Oregon in 1846. John, Ninian, and Crockett were central figures in the Oregonians' massacre of Indians that occurred near Coloma in 1849 despite the fact that John himself was 1/4 Apsalooke (Crow). Crockett would later marry a woman named Mary Jesus Smith, a member of the Sais family that held some of the original Spanish land grants in/near present day Marin County. After his death she became the wife of Britton Bailey Greenwood, yet another of Caleb's sons that, along with his father, played a prominent role in leading the Second Relief of the Donner Party in early 1847.
