The following obituary appeared in the Elberton Star newspaper on 9 Feb 1917:

"DEATH CLAIMS GOOD WOMAN OF GAINES.

"Mrs. T. H. Powell died Tuesday at her home near Rock Branch church. She was 73 years of age, and one of the best women of the community. She was a consistent member of Rock Branch District Baptist church for many years, a devoted wife and mother, and a kind and considerate neighbor and true friend. Her remains were buried at Rock Branch church Wednesday. The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. C. West. Mrs. Powell is survived by her husband and four children- Mrs. C. L. Smith of Elberton, and Messrs. Preston, Raymond and W. M. Powell, all of Elbert county."
