Notes on the Parents of Sarah Belle Berryman

  • Parents = UNKNOWN.
  • cos1776 Speculation (2014): It is possible that Sarah Belle "Berryman" and Arry Belle "Barnes" are the same individual and that she is the not the daughter but rather the niece of Arzela (Hall) Berryman, born out of wedlock to Arzela's sister Mary Hall. She would have been raised in Arzela's household and eventually married Arzela's son.
    • CLUE: No birth records have been found for either "Sarah Belle Berryman" or "Arry Belle Barnes (or Hall)". Per later records, it is shown that both are supposedly born at the same time and place (i.e. abt 1873 in Estill County, Kentucky).
    • CLUE: In 1880, "Sarah Belle Berryman" (age 7) first appears, listed as a daughter in widow Arzela (Hall) Berryman's household. Arzela's husband, John, has been gone out of the household since before the 1870 census, so who is "Sarah Belle"'s father? No further records have been found for "Sarah Belle Berryman".
    • CLUE: At the same time (1880), there is no census record found in the same vicinity for a separate individual named "Arry Belle Barnes (or Hall)".
    • CLUE: In 1889, Arzela's son, Green Berryman, marries "Arry Belle Barnes".
    • CLUE: In 1920, the death certificate for Green and Belle's daughter, Lena, lists her parents as "Green Berryman and Belle Hall".
    • CLUE: In 1935, Belle's death certificate lists her parents as "Unknown Barnes and Mary Hall". There are no known records in which Arzela (Hall) Berryman is listed as "Mary", but she did have a younger sister named "Mary" of whom no adult information is known.
