    Former Houston Resident Dies

    Services for Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Whitfield, 85, a former Houston resident, were conducted at 2 pm, Monday from Wright & Ferguson Chapel at Jackson, Miss., with the Rev. Leonard Holloway officiating.

    Interment was in Lakewood Cemetery at Jackson. Mrs. Whitfield, a sister of Mrs. Doyle Stubblefield of Houston and John and Irby Atkinson, died Sunday at her home in Jackson after a long illness.

    Mrs. Whitfield resided in Houston in the home of Mrs. J C Beasley which burned not long ago.

    The Stubblefields were at her bedside when she died. She was a former resident of Gulfport and Pass Christian before moving to Jackson. She attended Mississippi Normal College in Houston and was a member of the Robinson Street Baptist Church, the Ralph Humphreys Chapter of the D A R, the Mississippi Poetry Society and Penwomen of America.

    Survivors include two sons, Robert Demar Whitfield and John Lewis Whitfield, both of Jackson; two daughters, Mrs. Lorayne Westbrook of Jackson and Mrs. H A Alexander of Grenada.

    Robert Fitzhugh Whitfield and Sarah Elizabeth Atkinson Whitfield were married 16 June 1896 in Chickasaw, Mississippi. (Information provided by Whitfield Descendant Nancy Yankie Sidarous.)
