Mrs. John Atkinson Dies at Van Vleet

From Friendship church at Van Vleet Wednesday morning funeral services were held for Mrs. Mattie Atkinson who died Tuesday afternoon after two weeks illness at her home at Van Vleet.

The Rev. Hubert Collins and the Rev. Andrews officiated. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery, the B C Funeral Home in charge.

Pallbearers were, Clyde Park, Otis Marion, Davis Marion, Jim Davis, Bob McNorton and L O Smith.

In the death of Mrs. Atkinson Chickasaw County has lost one of the oldest citizens, for had she lived until December she would have reached her 91st birthday. She was the last member of her family, who were pioneer settlers. She was before her marriage to the late John Atkinson, Mattie Smith. Since that time she had lived in the same community, the greater part having been spent in her late residence.

She was a member of the Baptist church.

She leaves three sons, John Atkinson of Van Vleet, Irby Atkinson of Winona and Clyde of Oklahoma; three daughters, Mrs. Hubert Collins of Van Vleet, Mrs. Sallie Whitfield of Jackson, and Mrs. Doyle Stubblefield of Houston; a number of grandsons and daughters and several great grandchildren."
