Sarah Allen was baptised on 8th February 1731 at Kirkby la Thorpe in Lincolnshire, daughter of Sarah Allen, formerly Ellis, and her husband Thomas Allen, a labourer. When young Sarah was eight years old her mother died. Her father remarried in 1741, with a Mary Draper becoming Sarah's stepmother.

Sarah was married on 27th April 1762 to a labourer called Richard Belton, who was living in the nearby parish of Swineshead at the time of their marriage.

Sarah and Richard settled in Kirkby la Thorpe after their marriage, having three children baptised there between 1765 and 1769, although the third child died as a baby, being buried just two days after his baptism.

Richard died in 1770. He was said to be 53 years old. Sarah was clearly pregnant at the time; she had twin sons baptised in the October after Richard's death, one of whom she named Richard.

Sarah's father died in 1784.

Sarah survived Richard by nearly 33 years. She died at the age of 72, being buried on 15th February 1803 at Kirkby la Thorpe.
