Richard Belton's origins have yet to be established. If the age given when he died was correct then he was born around 1716.

Richard's first confirmed sighting is on 27th April 1762, when he married Sarah Allen at Kirkby la Thorpe in Lincolnshire. Richard was described as being a labourer of the nearby parish of Swineshead at the time of their marriage.

Richard and Sarah settled in Kirkby la Thorpe after their marriage, having three children baptised there between 1765 and 1769, although the third child died as a baby, being buried just two days after his baptism.

Richard died in 1770, being buried at Kirkby la Thorpe on 7th May 1770. He was said to be 53 years old. Sarah was clearly pregnant at the time; she had twin sons baptised in the October after Richard's death, one of whom she named Richard. Sarah survived Richard by nearly 33 years.
