HISTORY: Book "The Tempered Wind," by Sidney Alvarus Hanks, published in 1956; fictionalized history; sidney took his manuscript to a professional writer who added conversational style. ERRORS: (note corrections) Family crossed ocean on Horizon and not companion ship Thornton, both bringing saints to America for the last crossing of handcart companies. Clara stayed in England, married and went to Australia with husband, had children, husband died. She immigrated to Utah to be with family in Utah at a nuch later date. Walter ended up missing after a few days on the plains. Samuel took his son Samuel with him to look for the missing walter; they separated to cover more territory. Mother Georgiana and daughters, Thisbe & Alicia, continued on to Utah with Martin Handcart Company. Trapped in Rocky Mountains by early winter snows, miraculous rescue by Ephraim K. Hanks. Walter was not captured by Indians as written in book, but was enticed by men who said they would give him a poney if he stayed with them. Father Samuel located Walter and then made residence with a woman in Iowa. Upon advice of Ephraim Hanks, Elizabeth Georgiana and daughter Thisbe left Utah and returned to Iowa. They met father Samuel & Walter. Parents separated & divorced (not sure if in Iowa or Utah). Georgiana, Thisbe & Walter remain in Iowa two years to continue looking for missing son Samuel while father Samuel went on th Utah (probably to see if he crossed the plains with another group). Father Samuel Read added middle name George after arriving in Utah to distinguish himself from son Samuel Milford Read. Samuel never marrried woman on the plains or have her come to Utah, althoughhe did marry in plural marriage in Utah. Georgiana, Thisbe & Walter crossed the plains to Utah second time with ox train. After arriving in Utah, Georgiana could have stayed with samuel and had marriage sealing. But she did not have living sealing with Samuel because she had divorced him. Georgiana married John rodwell & had living marriage sealing with him. Both parents were sealed to different spouses. (Unsure of how this affected them. The daughters Thisbe & Alicia had proxy marriage sealing for parents and had themselves sealed to their deceased bloodline parents). Later Son Samuel Milford Read arrives in Salt Lake City and contacts his family. On Utah Census record, two sons, Walter & Samuel, are living in Nephi with their mother and John Rodwell. John's first wife Sarah was not listed with John on this census although living at time of census. When Sarah dies she is buried in the Salt Lake Cemetery, plat B, Blk 9, lot 4, tier W1/2 but not by John & Georgina. - 12. BURIAL: John Rodwell, plat J, Blk 7, lot 14, died 2 May 1884, Salt Lake City Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Utah. - 13. BURIAL: Sarah Rodwell, buried 7 March 1879, Salt Lake City Cemetery, plat B, Blk 9, lot 4, tier W1/2, a different location from her husband, John Rodwell's, grave. There is no headstone marking Sarah's grave. Grave location is noted by the sexton's office workers. We know her to be our Sarah by the family names that surround this location, also unmarked. Thesse people are her daughter's Eliza Jane, family. They are: Ellen Jane Pearce, buried 8 Jan 1868; John Pearce, buried 4 Jun 1869; Susan B. Beattie, 8 Jun 1874, Rosenna Hillier, 25 Jun 1882; Chas. Wm. Peaarce, 13 Apr 1884; Jno J. Hiller, 16 Aug 1904; chas. Pearce, 9 Nov 1901 (Eliza Jane Rodwell's husband). There is a circle of headstones in the cemetery and then this empty area. This is where these 8 people are burried. This information was obtained at the sexton's office by Sherry Smith, 6 Oct 1995. - 14. CENSUS: "Georgenia" E. Rodwell is listed with John Rodwell on the Utah 1880 census, film #1,255,336, page 387 Nephi, Juab, Utah, but not with him on the 1870 and 1860 census. Sarah Rodwell (first wife), age 62, film #805314, page 201, Nephi, Utah census, is listed with John age 60, in the 1860; and John is listed by himself in the 1870 census, page 210. 2.
